2015 Whistler GoFest Preview

The Great Outdoors Festival returns to Whistler this Victoria Day Long weekend, May 15-18. During the 4-day festival participants will get the chance to take part in a number of events including skiing, biking, golfing, disk, golfing, sailing, kayaking, volleyball and much more. Along with outdoor activities, the event will showcase a number of art shows, free concerts, film screenings and learning experiences.

The festival takes place throughout Whistler, utilizing different venues and outdoor spaces. Many of the events require registration including some sort of fee to participate - this is the case in many of the sports' categories. However, many of the events are FREE to attend including the art shows, concert series and demo days.

With 58 events on tap for Go Fest, there is sure to be something for every type of outdoor lover or artistic soul. Fly Fishing Demo

When: Friday, May 15 | 1:30 PM - 3 PM, 3 PM - 5 PM, Saturday, May 16 | 9 AM - 10:30 AM, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM, 1:30 PM - 3 PM, 3 PM - 5 PM
Cost: FREE

Have you ever wanted to learn how to fly fish but just never knew where to start? Well, perhaps this is your chance. Join Aaron Goodis on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 for a free fly tying demo and casting demo. During these events, Aaron will explain the basics in tying your own fly's and how to cast with a fly rod. While casting seems easy enough, there is, in fact, a unique science to it that needs to be practiced and perfected. Learn the basics of fly fishing during this two-day event and prepare yourself to get out on the river or lake.

The Great Snow-Earth-Water- Race

When: Sunday, May 17
Cost: $200 per team

The GSEWR is team event made up 5 to 7 participants with at least 2 members of each gender required on a team. During the event participants must complete 5 different stages including a skiing or snowboarding leg on Whistler Blackcomb, a downhill mountain biking component in the Whistler Bike Park, a run, canoe along the River of Golden Dreams and cross-country bike component. The event is run in a relay format. Teams will be provided with a wearable lanyard which is passed on from teammate to teammate at each transition. This event has grown to become kind of the signature festival event, showcasing five different activities Whistler has become known for over the years.

Concert Series

When: Everyday
Cost: FREE

Go Fest will once again be hosting a FREE concert series to coincide with the event. There will be a FREE concert held Friday to Sunday from 7:30 PM to 9 PM and on Monday from 3 PM to 5 PM. Check out some great tunes after a long day of playing in the wild.

The GoPro GOShow Film Series

When: Sunday, May 17 | 7 PM - 10 PM
Where: Garibaldi Lift Co

Six athletes armed with a GoPro Hero 4+ Black edition camera will compete for a grand prize of $2,500 and the title of becoming Whistler's GoPro GOShow Champion. The goal of each film is to capture the essence of May in Whistler using the world's most versatile camera to showcase experiences on snow, dirt, and water. Join us at the GLC on Sunday, May 17 as the six finalists compete for the cash prize. Doors open at 7 PM.
