4th Annual Whistler IRONMAN
It's almost time for Whistlers fourth annual Subaru
IRONMAN Canada triathlon. Where some of the best endurance
athletes will compete, this Sunday (July 24). The race itself is
composed of a 3.86km swim, a 180.25km bike loop between
Whistler and Pemberton and then a 42.2km run to finish it
off.
This year Whistler is also hosting the IRONMAN 70.3, which is half
of all the distances of a regular Ironman, and will be on the same
course.
Organizers are predicting about 2,000 athletes have signed
up to compete on Sunday.
With road closures and traffic delays, Whistler locals know from
last year that this won't be the best time to drive around. They're
reminding locals to plan ahead while the Resort Municipality of
Whistler is encouraging people to use the valley trail but to be
mindful of the parts being used in the race.
For locals wishing to view the race, there are multiple different
viewing areas around town. The swim starts at 6:45am in Rainbow
Park. The finish line is located in the Whistler Olympic
Plaza with runners expected to be there around 1pm. The
Olympic Plaza will also have a big screen for viewing the race
throughout the day.
Organizers are also inviting the public to come see the IRONMAN expo that will be held at the Whistler Olympic Plaza from Thursday to Monday. As well as the Ironkids race that is taking place on Saturday (July 23) at 9am.
